How to Use Islamic Prayer Beads (Tasbih / Misbaha)

Educational guide. Last updated 14 September 2026. This is not a fatwa. Schools of law differ on some details. Ask a qualified teacher for your situation.

Islamic prayer beads (tasbih, also called misbaha or subha) are a counting aid for dhikr: remembering Allah with set phrases. You move one bead per recitation so you can keep your count without watching a number. The words matter more than the beads. Fingers are the original method taught from the Prophet (peace be upon him). Beads are a practical helper when you want a longer count, travel, or a quiet habit after salah.

What are Islamic prayer beads?

A tasbih is a string of beads used to count phrases of remembrance. The common sizes are 33 beads and 99 beads. A 99-bead string is usually divided into three groups of 33. A marker bead or tassel (the imam bead) marks the start and end of a cycle. You can use either size for the same phrases. The 33-bead string is smaller to carry. The 99-bead string lets you finish a full post-prayer round on one pass.

What do you say on the beads?

The best-known post-prayer count is thirty-three of each phrase, then a closing line to complete one hundred. Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) taught: after every prayer, glorify Allah thirty-three times, praise Him thirty-three times, and declare His greatness thirty-three times, ninety-nine in all, then complete one hundred with: “La ilaha illallahu, wahdahu la sharika lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamdu, wa huwa ala kulli shay’in qadir.” He said the person’s sins would be forgiven even if they were as abundant as the foam of the sea. A closely related report in Sahih al-Bukhari 843 also records Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar thirty-three times after the obligatory prayer. Source: sunnah.com/bukhari:843.

Meanings in English:

  • Subhan Allah — Glory be to Allah; Allah is free of every fault.
  • Alhamdulillah — All praise is for Allah.
  • Allahu Akbar — Allah is greater.
  • La ilaha illallah… — There is no god but Allah, alone, without partner. To Him belongs the kingdom and the praise, and He is able to do all things.

These phrases are recommended after salah. They are not a substitute for the prayer itself.

How to use a 33-bead tasbih

Hold the tassel or marker bead between your thumb and finger so you know where the cycle starts. Rest the first working bead against your finger. Say one phrase, then slide to the next bead. Keep the same phrase until you finish the string.

  1. Start at the bead next to the marker.
  2. Say Subhan Allah on each of the 33 beads. That is one full pass.
  3. Say Alhamdulillah on each of the 33 beads. Second pass.
  4. Say Allahu Akbar on each of the 33 beads. Third pass.
  5. On the marker bead, say the closing tahlil above to complete one hundred.

If you lose count, start that phrase again. Do not rush the words to “finish” the beads.

How to use a 99-bead tasbih

A 99-bead string is the same three phrases on one pass. Most 99-bead tasbihs have a small divider every 33 beads.

  1. Start after the marker bead.
  2. Subhan Allah on the first 33 beads, up to the first divider.
  3. Alhamdulillah on the next 33 beads, up to the second divider.
  4. Allahu Akbar on the last 33 beads, back to the marker.
  5. On the marker, say the closing tahlil to complete one hundred.

You can also use a 99-bead string for one hundred of a single phrase, or for any count you have learned from a teacher. The string does not lock you into one formula.

Fingers or beads?

Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) said he saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) counting tasbih on his fingers, and one wording specifies the right hand. Source: Sunan Abi Dawud 1502, graded sahih by al-Albani on that collection’s note, sunnah.com/abudawud:1502.

Fingers are the method in that report. Beads are a later counting tool used across the Muslim world. If you can keep the count on your right hand, do that. If beads help you stay consistent after Maghrib on a tired evening, use them. The worship is the remembrance, not the object in your hand.

When people use tasbih

Common times:

  • Immediately after the five daily prayers, while you are still sitting.
  • In the morning and evening adhkar, if you have a set you learned from a reliable book or teacher.
  • While walking, waiting, or sitting after Quran reading, as extra remembrance.
  • On a commute, with a small 33-bead string in a pocket or bag.

Do not swing the beads for display. Do not let them become a fidget toy that pulls your mind away from the words. If you are in salah, your hands belong to the prayer. Tasbih with beads is after you have given the closing salam.

33 vs 99 vs a digital counter

Tool Best for Trade-off
Right-hand fingers The method in the hadith above; nothing to carry Easy to lose count if you are tired or interrupted
33-bead tasbih Pocket, travel, three passes of 33 You must complete three circuits for the 99 count
99-bead tasbih One pass for the classic post-prayer round Bulkier; keep it clean and off the floor
Digital counter or ring Quiet counting when beads would rattle A screen can pull your attention; treat it as a counter, not a toy

Sajada sells a compact 33-pearl tasbih, a 99-pearl tasbih, and a small digital dhikr ring. Use whichever helps you remember Allah without fuss. Shop tasbeeh and dhikr, including the 33-pearl tasbih, the 99-pearl tasbih, and the ZIKR digital ring.

Care and adab

  • Keep the string clean. Wipe pearls or wood with a dry cloth. Avoid soaking glued tassels.
  • Store it with your prayer things, not mixed with keys and coins that scratch it.
  • Do not place it on a dirty surface. Do not step over it.
  • If a child wants to copy you, let them hold a spare string and learn the three phrases slowly.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to use prayer beads?

No. Beads are optional. The Prophet (peace be upon him) counted on his fingers. Use beads if they help you keep the count. The phrases after salah remain recommended either way.

Is a 33-bead tasbih enough?

Yes. Three passes of 33 equal 99, then add the closing tahlil. Many people keep a 33-bead string in a pocket for that reason.

Can I use beads during salah?

No. Complete the prayer, give salam, then begin dhikr. Beads are for counting remembrance after the prayer or outside it.

What if I lose count?

Restart that phrase. Guessing a leftover number to “finish” the string is not the point. A calm, complete Subhan Allah is better than a rushed, uncertain 33.

Are digital counters allowed?

A counter is a tool, like beads. If it helps you remember Allah and does not turn into a distraction, it can serve the same job as a string. Keep the words on your tongue, not on the gadget.
